The Merrill Area Public Schools offer a comprehensive curriculum that emphasizes reading, mathematics, science, language arts, history, fine arts, foreign languages and a broad scope of vocational programs. Areas of highlight include Title services; solid ELA and Math curricula; school-to-work and apprenticeship programs; at-risk student programs; computer education and others.
The curricular programs are vetted by staff to enable the district to provide meaningful, high-quality materials and an instructional methodology to meet the various needs of students today. The MAPS Special Education Program is a multi-dimensional program that is designed to meet the educational needs of children who display many different types of learning and other disabilities.
The Merrill Area Public School district presently serves students in grades 9-12 (one high school with 798 students), in grades 5-8 (one middle school with 541 students), in grades 3-4 (Washington Elementary School with 248 students) and in kindergarten through 2nd grade (Kate Goodrich Elementary School with 358 students). The district also maintains one school forest and a pre-kindergarten facility that is operated by the school district for Head Start students, 4K students and Early Childhood students with disabilities. Currently, 127 three- and four-year-old children are enrolled in this integrated program. Our community-based pre-kindergarten program began in 2010-11. MAPS also offers virtual courses through its Bridges Virtual Academy (4K-12). BVA's enrollment for the 2023-2024 school year is approximately 700 students from around the state.
There are approximately 362 staff members employed by the school district, including 208 people who are professionally certified teachers. The backbone of MAPS is the experience and training of its staff. Both the district’s support staff and teaching staff have a low turnover rate.
An important fact about the MAPS student body is that more than half of the graduates who start in the university system finish. Also, as a school district, Merrill is unparalleled in the state of Wisconsin in the number and value of scholarships awarded to graduates each year (between $500,000 and $600,000 of locally funded scholarships and with outside scholarships, a total of $1,500,000). Merrill values education as a path to success for its young people.
