MERRILL, WI – The Merrill Area Public Schools (MAPS), in partnership with the Merrill Police Department, is proud to announce the expansion of the School Resource Officer (SRO) program for the 2025-2026 school year. This year, two officers will serve the district: Officer Nicole Cimino and Officer John Sass.
The SRO program was first established in 2005, placing one uniformed officer at Merrill High School and Prairie River Middle School to support administrators, staff, and students. Beginning in 2025, the program expands to include two officers, providing greater visibility, consistency, and support across all MAPS schools within the City of Merrill.
The primary role of the School Resource Officer is to help maintain a safe and positive learning environment. SROs serve as liaisons between schools, law enforcement, and community resources, while also acting as educators and positive role models for students. Through classroom instruction, counseling, and daily interactions, SROs build trust, answer questions about the law, and guide students toward responsible citizenship.
Some key goals of the SRO initiative include:
Building positive relationships between students and law enforcement.
Identifying and preventing delinquent behavior through early intervention and referral.
Supporting crime victims within the school setting.
Providing crime prevention and safety education to students and staff.
“We are excited to expand this program to better serve all of our schools,” said Superintendent Shannon Murray. “By having two dedicated School Resource Officers, MAPS can provide stronger support, safety, and connections for students, families, and staff.”
The uniformed officers not only provide security but also act as approachable mentors—someone students can turn to as a friend, counselor, coach, or guide. Their presence helps bridge the gap between young people and law enforcement, reinforcing honesty, fairness, and good citizenship.
Chief of Police Corey Bennett, added, “We couldn’t be more excited about this addition and this ongoing partnership that continues to bear fruit for the community. We are really excited to see the positive impact that two highly capable officers can bring to the table. Officer Cimino and Officer Sass are definitely energized and looking forward to doing their part in promoting an optimal learning environment for our students.”
MAPS looks forward to the positive impact Officer Cimino and Officer Sass will bring to students, staff, and the Merrill community throughout the year.
