Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) is made up of a group of students that are interested in a future career in business. Members of FBLA receive many benefits through the different activities (such as going to competitions and competing with other FBLA members in the same district, state, or even at the international level). You can compete as an individual or as a team in over 50 different categories ranging from accounting to public speaking.
In addition to competitions, you can even organize a community drive. For example, every year Merrill FBLA members get together and organize a food drive during the holiday seasons to benefit the local food pantry and others in need.
We also fundraise to do end of the year trips to many different places. One of the bigger FBLA trips that we have the opportunity to do is three days in New York City touring the New York Stock Exchange. So the question is “are you ready for the experience of a life time”?
Merrill High School’s Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) is a student-led body comprised of those students interested in pursuing business-related careers, although it isn’t required. Any young person can join. Mrs. Jameson is the FBLA advisor.
The goals of Merrill FBLA are to learn business practices through practical applications. Members of FBLA plan and implement their own fundraising strategies and ideas. Typical fundraisers include selling food for the parent-teacher conferences, Valentine’s Day rose sales, and Christmas candy cane sales. Members advertise, set their own prices, and get together before, during, and/or after school to accomplish what needs to be done. Skills such as money management, leadership, and basic economics are learned hands-on.
The structure of FBLA is simple. Officers are elected at the end of every year and consist of President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, Reporter, and Historian. The club typically meets Tuesday mornings in Mrs. Jameson’s business room (#103). Occasional after school meetings are also necessary. Dates and times to be announced. The club is as flexible as the members make it.
The funds that are raised through year-long fundraising, goes towards two initiatives. First and foremost is charity. Merrill FBLA typically gives an annual contribution to March of Dimes to support their ongoing fight to prevent birth defects. Second is to utilize the hard work and dedication put into the fundraising to fund a trip at the end of the year to tour a business-related facility in larger cities.
